Whether you’re new to the world of TEFL or you’re looking to increase or add to your TEFL qualifications and experience, CELTA is highly recommended due to its widespread acceptance by employers of English language teachers. CELTA is so highly regarded due to the great importance that is attached to quality control. This is assured in a number of ways, including Cambridge approval and moderation. Our trainers offer advice on everything from initial decisions on taking the course to how to find a job once you have qualified. The training centre is located within our English language school with students from around the world. This means that trainees can experience life in a real school environment and are surrounded by real English language learners. The course is run as a four-week demanding but stimulating intensive course and as a six-month part-time course over twenty weeks. To join the Cambridge CELTA Teacher Training course you must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum level of education equivalent to university entrance. You should be a native English speaker or have an equivalent standard of written and spoken English. You don’t need previous teaching experience, though some applicants will be qualified teachers who want a change of career direction. The school can arrange accommodation with host families or in the school residence. The course includes practical demonstrations and workshops during which you will discover new ways of teaching English and experience a wide range of activities, materials and tasks that will help your students communicate in English. The course consists of 120 contact hours which is made up of the following: Input sessions Teaching Practice - with volunteer students Supervised lesson planning Feedback on teaching practice Peer observation of teaching practice Observation of experienced teachers Tutorials Four written assignments Cambridge also recommends a further 120 hours of self-study time (background reading, assignment writing, lesson preparation, etc.) Coursework and teaching are internally assessed and externally moderated by Cambridge ESOL. There are five main units of learning: Learners and teachers, and teaching and learning content - educational backgrounds and traditions of learners, motivations, different learning styles. Language analysis and awareness - how English works, basic concepts and terms used to describe form and meaning in language and language use, language skills, and syllabus design. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Planning and resources for different contexts - selecting and adapting materials for learning activities and tasks, selection, use and evaluation of commercial and non-published resources. Developing teaching skills and professionalism - self assessment of strengths and weaknesses, working as teacher, colleague, employer. The course is intensive, and requires a full-time commitment. There are 2 components of the course assessment: Teaching practice and Written Assignments There is no final examination. Assessment is based on your performance throughout the course and is continuous i.e. throughout the course) and integrated (all components count towards the final grade). To be awarded the certificate your must pass both components. An external assessor appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course. As preparation for the interview we will ask you to complete a pre-interview task. This will consist of several tasks to help us to ascertain your fluency in spoken and written English and your current knowledge and perception of how English works. These tasks will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. During the interview we will talk about what you should expect on the course in as much detail as possible, ask you to perform a short teaching-related task, discuss the answers to your written pre-interview tasks and allow you the opportunity to ask any questions and/or discuss any concerns you may have. This last part of the pre-interview procedure may be conducted in a group with other applicants. Your team-working and communication skills will also be assessed.
