Home > General Pages > DELTA Teacher Training Courses DELTA Teacher Training Courses Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language The DELTA course is one of the best-known and most popular advanced TEFL/TESOL qualifications in the world. It is a flexible way for experienced English language teachers to progress further in their careers. This course will cover Modules One and Two, and guidance will be given on setting up the Extended Assignment for Module Three towards the end of the course. Module Three may be taken by distance learning following completion of the first two modules. When we receive your application, we will invite you for an interview. This will give you an opportunity to meet us and to see the school. It also gives us a good idea whether the fairly rigorous and demanding course is for you! To help us in assessing your skills we will also ask you to complete a pre-interview task. The course is split into two teaching blocks of five and two weeks respectively. Assignment work will be carried out during the interim period, but course participants will be able to return to employment during this time. Overview There are three DELTA modules: Module One - Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching Module Two - Developing Professional Practice Module Three: Option 1: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism; Option 2: English Language Teaching Management Module One - Written examination The written examination is externally set and marked. Module Two - Coursework There are five coursework assignments. Four of these are internally assessed; one is externally assessed. In addition there is overall external moderation of your coursework by Cambridge ESOL. All of the assignments integrate theory and practice. Module Three – Extended assignment The extended assignment is a case study, and is externally marked. As part of your course you should expect approximately 200 contact hours with fellow candidates and course tutors and ten hours of teaching adults. Four of these lessons are supervised and assessed by a course tutor and one is externally assessed. In addition, you have ten hours of directed observation of lessons, with at least five of these being live lessons taught by experienced teachers. Who recognises DELTA DELTA is accepted throughout the world by organisations who employ English language teachers. It is accredited in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Ofqual as a Diploma in Teaching ESOL at Level 7 on the National Qualifications Framework (Master’s level). DELTA is also integrated into some MA programmes (details are available of the Cambridge ESOL website (www.CambridgeESOL.org). Cambridge ESOL works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of DELTA globally. Entry Requirements The DELTA course is intended for experienced teachers wishing to extend their professional experience and accept new responsibilities, as it not only demonstrates a commitment to the profession, but is also proof of ability. All participants must have a native/near-native competence in English, both written and spoken, to enable them to follow the course and complete all elements successfully. Ideally, applicants should have: a range of teaching experience in different contexts and at different levels at least two years’ full time (1,200 hours) experience of teaching English to adults within the past five years an initial teaching qualification (preferably Cambridge ESOL CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL) a standard of spoken and written English which will enable them to teach at a range of levels up to and including CEF Level C1 We may still accept you if you do not strictly meet all of these requirements but can demonstrate that you would be likely to complete the course successfully. This is entirely at the centre’s discretion.
